Carl Rogers once said, “If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system induces, then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning.”These very words describe the environment here in the International Hall of the Catholic University of Korea. In pursuit of globalization, CUK has invited students from different countries and housed them all together in the International Hall (IH), making it look like one little replica of the United Nations. With its sublime facilities, the IH of CUK provides a very conducive atmosphere for learning and a sense of home for its occupants. Managed by very courteous and hospitable staff, who are always ready to assist the students with their concerns, the IH ensures the students’have a good and comfortable stay. The best part is the convergence of various cultures of different countries, giving both the Korean and foreign students the opportunity to learn and understand more about each other’s culture and establish better ties with the international community. Like what they always say, there’s no better way to learn things but to experience it firsthand.
The International Hall of CUK is a great initiative in promoting the idea of CUK’s willingness to embrace the world and provide a student friendly environment for its residents, however, CUK might want to assess the proficiency of the IH staffs with regards to the use of the English language. The only thing that hinders the foreign students from approaching the staffs is the fact that there is a chance that they might not understand each other at all. But rest assured that this situation doesn’t hinder the CUK from providing the IH residents the best possible service there is.
